How to Perform a Site Survey for Coffee Equipment

1. What coffee equipment do they currently use?

Look for existing coffee brewers, grinders and servers. This may not be the same equipment we offer, but this informs you about the space available for the replacement as well as what they are already accustomed to using. Bring a tape measure to note the counterspace available and take notes on limitations or restrictions. Is there an upper shelf or cabinet that could prevent a taller brewer from fitting underneath it on the counter?

2. Check the water supply.

Pour-over or plumbed? Does the water enter the machine via a tube and fitting in back (plumbed) or by pouring into the top (pour-over). Most municipalities will supply suitable pressure (20-80 psi) but note that other appliances in use at the same time as the brewer may limit performance or cause errors.

3. Check the electrical outlets.

The standard outlets with which you are familiar work fine if the brewer “works on 120.” However, to achieve higher coffee volumes, some brewers will need a special outlet installed to run on more power. “Dryer plug” is a term that most people understand, but with coffee equipment we want to see an L14-30 (twist-lock) receptacle. This industry standard style locks the plug to the wall with a twist and helps to prevent unfortunate accidents. Additionally, checking the breaker box will ensure that there is adequate amperage per receptacle. On 120 V circuits, the brewer requires 20 AMP breakers. On 220V circuits: 30 AMP breakers required.
